Artist Biography
Born in the heartland of the United States, Barbara grew up in an old Saint Louis family which celebrated her interest in education and art. As a young woman, she traveled extensively living for a time in Switzerland as well as the American Virgin Islands. She has enjoyed long summers on Michigan’s beaches as well as in the Adirondacks and Maine with extended family. She shares a passion for sailing with her husband. This has led them to many recent adventures with friends in some of the most beautiful waters of the world.
Her watercolors continue a theme, SCAPES, which she developed during her work for her Master of Fine Arts Degree. Landscapes, seacapes, soulscapes, and e-scapes explore the essential rhythms of her life experiences. When landscapes, her paintings capture the illusive quality of light and color evident to the discerning eye. When seacapes, they capture the force and rhythms of the wind through expressive marks on paper. When soulscapes, they capture the spirit of the subject’s soul through gesture and expression. And when e-scapes, they are abstract explorations of the duality of brokenness and restoration which engage her heart. Merging the fluidity of the watercolor medium on handmade paper parallels the transience of treasured memories.
